“Psyche” from ‘Flux’ in a scene from ‘Dawson’s Creek’ S5: The Bostonians 10/10/2001
Love Spirals Downwards’ first television music placement was on the internationally syndicated show ‘Dawson’s Creek’ on The WB network. The 1998 ‘Flux’ track “Psyche” was featured in a party scene starring Michelle Williams and Chad Michael Murray on the season 5 premiere episode “The Bostonians.” According to Neilson Media Research this episode had 4.47 million viewers when it aired on October 10, 2001. It was really cool hearing this vocal drum ‘n’ bass song co-written and sung by Suzanne’s sister, Kristen Perry, on such a popular TV show and especially in such a long, fun scene.
Check out “Psyche” on the new 25th Anniversary ’Flux Deluxe Edition’ out now on all digital music services including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Bandcamp, and YouTube Music!
It’s been 25 years since the last Love Spirals Downwards t-shirt was released by Projekt. Many fans have lamented the lack of band merch in recent times, so we had the classic 1992 hand drawn band logo recreated digitally for use on t-shirts, hoodies, and stickers. Get a tee in sizes S through 4XL in either classic black or ‘Idylls’ blue from the newly launched Love Spirals Downwards Spring shop. A sticker comes in those same color combos.
Spotify has posted an official playlist of the band’s music. Not sure, but it might update from time to time to include trending songs? Follow the list to find out — and be sure to mark your favorite songs with a heart!
“Stir About The Stars” from Love Spirals Downwards’ 1992 debut album, ‘Idylls,’ is featured on the upcoming Cherry Red Records ‘Cherry Stars Collide – Dream Pop, Shoegaze & Ethereal Rock 1986-1995’ 4CD Box Set. The follow-up companion collection to the label’s 2016 release, ‘Still In A Dream,’ this collection promises “lesser known half-lit gems and sleepy pop nuggets of the 80’s and 90’s.’ Read more below or preorder your copy now.
Lovespirals return to their darker hued roots with a new digital single. “The Call” shares some of the retro-90’s shoe gazer/dream pop vibes of their last full-length album, ‘Life Goes On,’ highlighting the lush guitar work Ryan Lum is known for. His soaring solo could easily have been plucked from the 1994, Ardor. Hypnotic bass and upbeat drums drive this melancholic song with an unexpected groove, while his wife Anji’s signature blend of earthy low voice and soaring ethereal harmonies lift your soul. Cover photo by Susan Jennings, the band’s longtime photographer who was actually behind the band being discovered by Projekt Records in 1991.
Last month Apple Music launched a new DJ Mix Series which features exclusive mixes dropping bi-weekly from “a range of notable artists spanning genres and regions,” as their press says. The show’s second episode, released this March, is a mix by Bored Lord that includes “Alicia” (mistakenly credited as “Sound of Wave”). The classic Flux album track mixes in and out of The Future Sound of London and Malcom McClaren, with our song blending into the intro on “About Her,” as well.
Lovespirals 3-song single, ‘Smile,’ is out NOW on all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Mp3, Tidal, YouTube, Deezer and Bandcamp. In addition to the brand new title track, ‘Smile’ features the moody song “Why Not Today,” that was previously only available on Bandcamp. All three songs continue the band’s tradition of working new influences into their signature dream pop sound. While a much lighter offering that 2018’s Life Goes On, there’s still a good deal of melancholy amidst the deceptively light, retro-esque, jazz and blues inflected indie pop tunes. Cover art by Tom Pathe, longtime friend of bandleader, Ryan Lum, and photographer for the 1992 debut album, Idylls.
Projekt is set to release the first-ever vinyl reissue of their classic album, ‘Excelsis ~ A Dark Noel.’ The most popular of their holiday themed various artist series, the original 1995 jewel box CD with 8-page booklet sold over 15,000 copies. This remastered album is currently available in a new six-panel digipak CD and digital download with two versions of a 140g weight color vinyl LP coming in November. There is a choice of either Aqua with White Splatter vinyl or Orchid with Purple and Grey Splatter vinyl limited to just 300 copies each.
Bandleader Ryan Lum returned to his master DAT tapes to find the original recording of Love Spirals Downwards’ 1995 recording of the Dr. Seuss classic, “Welcome Christmas,” from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The band’s shoegaze dream pop rendition has long been a fan favorite, so it’s great to hear a remastered version all these years later.
At long last, ‘Aitu’ from Suzanne’s band, Melodyguild, is available on Bandcamp for your streaming and downloading pleasure. Check it out on the Projekt Bandcamp page.
A DJ in Los Angeles recently mentioned to me how much he loves this EP from Suzanne Perry – vocalist from Love Spirals Downwards. Hard to believe it’s been 12+ years since I released it on Projekt, but there ya go! Time…. time keeps on rushing bye.
Released in 2008 — the only post-FLUX release with her vocals on multiple tracks — AITU is a lovely shoegazer portent of a band that was never to be…

The CD of this maxi-single released by Projekt is out of print.
John Diliberto is once again sharing our cover of John Denver’s “Aspen Glow” from the Projekt Excelsis ~ A Prelude CD on his nationally syndicated radio show, Echoes. We were delighted to learn he’d played it twice last holiday season, and now learned it’s back in rotation this year, as well! Our 2001 recording appeared on the Echoes Winter Solstice Soundscape playlists for December 21st and 26th.
