A note on “Misunderstood“: When Ryan originally recorded this song — then titled “I’ll Always Love You,” he was working with Cubase, a Sony MDM-X digital 4-track, and an Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler. Fast forward two decades, and that recording setup is long gone. Recreating the track for the 25th anniversary Flux Deluxe Edition meant bridging the past and present—using recovered bass guitar and drum break samples discovered on an old CDR to start a new Final Cut Pro project, recording brand-new guitar and synths, and having Anji step in to record the iconic single-word vocal originally sung by Suzanne Perry in 1997. With additional keyboard and production work, one of Ryan’s first-ever digital audio projects has been brought into the new era.
