Love Spirals Downwards

For over three decades, Ryan Lum has been the visionary force behind Love Spirals Downwards. As a multi-instrumentalist, composer, engineer, and producer, Lum has consistently crafted a signature sound that transports listeners to ethereal realms filled with lush textures, intricate melodies, and profound emotion.

From the groundbreaking atmospheric soundscapes of the 1990s to the genre-fluid explorations of the 2000s and beyond, Lum’s music has continually evolved through innovation and heartfelt expression. His compositions seamlessly weave together elements of dream pop, electronica, and a sultry, late-night blend of soul, R&B, jazz, and blues—always anchored by a deep understanding of mood and atmospheric intimacy.

Love Spirals Downwards emerged in 1992 on Projekt Records, a period defined by the ethereal vocal contributions of Suzanne Perry. This foundational era produced the acclaimed albums IdyllsArdorEver, and Flux. As the musical landscape shifted, so did the project. Around the turn of the millennium, the project entered a new creative chapter known as Lovespirals—a name synonymous with the longtime partnership between Ryan Lum and vocalist/co-producer Anji Bee (now Anji Lum). Launching the independent Chillcuts label, they established a brand-new era of artistic exploration and self-distribution, building a substantial catalog that continues to find new listeners alongside longtime fans.

Ryan has been a definitive DIY force since getting his first 4-track recorder in the mid-1980s, handling nearly every facet of the music himself—from playing all the instruments to recording, mixing, and producing. Driven by a commitment to full creative control, he is equally meticulous about archiving his musical legacy. Through a series of expanded, deluxe, and vinyl reissues, he has ensured that these original analogue recordings stay preserved and available, successfully navigating decades of constant, unpredictable shifts in the music business and the ongoing evolution of digital distribution.

Today, Love Spirals Downwards continues to evolve under the direction of Ryan Lum. In recent years, he has returned to the full moniker, writing and recording new material alongside his wife, vocalist/co-producer Anji Lum. This modern iteration masterfully balances Ryan’s trademark instrumentation with Anji’s soulful, ethereal vocals, bringing the project into a contemporary landscape with a sound that feels like the ultimate distillation of thirty years of sonic exploration—simultaneously nostalgic and completely modern.

As an entirely independent entity, Love Spirals Downwards remains artist-owned. From the project’s inception to the present day, Lum has maintained full autonomy over both the brand and the master catalog. This foundational independence ensures that as the Love Spirals Downwards sound continues to evolve, its rich history is protected, preserved, and expertly managed on his own terms.
